My family outgrew gifting each other for Christmas a few years ago and it is both simultaneously boring and relieving. Boring because after x many years of opting out of Christmas gift giving, I relived the magic of Christmas morning the past pandemic-ridden Christmas sans family and it was really, really fun. Even if it was spent with just one person—my partner— I was reminded of how special and creative the act of gift giving could be. How much do we know about each other! How personal and specific can we get! What do we love most about each other! But opting out of gift giving is relieving because it takes a little stress out of the holidays, you don’t need to partake in peak consumerism and you can declare that you are, in fact, the gift.
